Music Review: Duran Duran - All You Need is Now

Duran  Duran release their new album “All You Need Is Now” which many critics are claiming to be the follow up of their successful second album “Rio”. The new studio album does have a mystique aura about it, as it is their 13th album. The number 13 is historically a significant number through the ages, so for Duran Duran with their back to basics sound on “All You Need Is Now” it fits the groove perfectly.

Duran Duran  come full circle, and go back to their roots, with what made them successful as a band and recording artist in the first place, the music. There is even a sense of the visual artistic style that had eluded the band since the early 80’s.

The band minus a founding member Andy Taylor, come back with a smash hit album that is nothing shy of a miraculous reincarnation of their original sound and style,  including the romantic love affair of poem with dance pop music.

Mark Ronson who produced “All You Need Is Now” is a well known English DJ and producer, and avid Duran Duran fan since his childhood. Ronson takes Duran Duran and brings them back to their sound, and style of music and songs, which really makes this album the follow up of “Rio”.

Simon Le Bon’s vocals soar with conviction, energy and style on every track, which makes the album a true Duran Duran album. John Taylor is back as a Bass player, with those funky bass lines, that were heard on early Duran Duran albums, backed up with Roger’s solid drumming rhythm.  Last but not least is Nick Rhodes with the pioneering electrified synthesizer sounds of the early days.

Duran  Duran is back and stronger than before, “All You Need Is Now” is the next best album after “Rio”.

Track listing of All You Need Is Now:
  • All You Need Is Now
  • Blame The Machines
  • Being Followed
  • Leave a Light On
  • Safe (In the Heat of the Moment)
  • Girl Panic !
  • A Diamond in the Mind
  • The Man Who Stole a Leopard
  • Other People's Lives
  • Mediterranea
  • Too Bad You're So Beautiful
  • Runaway Runaway
  • Return to Now
  • Before the Rain

Duran Duran's new album "All You Need Is Now" is available now, released on Tapemodern Records, which is the bands own record label.

Duran Duran are about to go on tour to promote All You Need Is Now, and this tour marks the 30th anniversary of their debut album release "Duran Duran (1981)", which had one of its biggest singles "Girls on Film".

if you take Duran Duran's entire catalogue, put in a blender for 5 minutus, this album would be the result. It brilliantly covers 30 years of an amazing and underrated carrer. Thanx Duran Duran!

Thank you all for your comments, Ezequiel, that is good way of describing the new album. I agree with you. It does feel good to be a Duran Duran fan again. My favorite albums in the past were Rio and Notorious, and All You Need Is Now.

Thanks for the review, this is the most honest and original music review I have read so far. All other reviews are just rehashed statements.
I love your words, and the way you describe the album. So refreshing.
This is the best Duran Duran album so far.
I love Simon.

great review i've been a fan since 81 and i have to be honest, for fans to say it's better than rio is a big statement and i kind of agree it's definately up there and on a par with the first three album's 9/10.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but this album is nowhere near the class of the first 3 albums! It's lyrically shallow, musically uninteresting (listen to the tracks behind the vocals, they all merge into one and have no personality - all DD's early work was amazing each song you could listen to in instrumental form and it would still rock; not so on this album). And I've been a fan since 82 and have bought every single and every album and every video and seen them live 10+ times!

I think Mark Ronson only took a small part of their sound and stretched it too far, it's missing the darker/rockier side that made DD as good as they were. Where are tracks like careless memories, friends of mine, shadows on your side, sound of thunder? This album sounded like it was the bare minimum needed and is really a pastiche of their own work. Superficially it's 'very nice' sounding and glossy but it wears thin fast, there's no depth and they seem to be living up to the wrong image of themselves with this record, almost being the 'shall pop band' the haters accused them of.

Please DD think of the adults and the long term fans and those who like a bit of depth to their music for the next album and stop trying to appeal to a new era of teens using 'superstar producers', believe in yourselves and do honest work, even with the flaws you are more likely to create a true work of genius (Notorious, Ordinary World etc). I admit the lead single has a great chorus (All You Need is Now) that is 100% Duran at their best but the rest of the album is weak, it has too many females on it, uneeded, it dilutes the power. The sat nav vocal is cool and wortwhile but the rest sounds hammy. Safe is really weak, sounds like the theme from grease re-done in a poor fashion. Lyrics are samey throughout the album and there's no cohesion to it all. It lacks direction and should never have been targeted as 'follow up to Rio' as it's no such thing. I'll take ragged tiger and Notorious over this anyday (for that matter Astronaut and even RCM over this, RCM has flaws in the production but it has some deep quality songs in there that don't feel forced or trying to be an unending 'party band').

I know DD fans are very protective of DD but I'm one of you and I've stood up for these guys for the best part of 30 years in the face of critics and peers alike and I always had the perfect ammo in their music from the first 3/4 albums which spoke for it's self. With this new album I for the first time ever feel slightly embarassed to be such a vocal supporter of them as they are no longer making music for 'me' but for some hazy target they have convinced themselves is what they used to do back in the early 80s. Maybe Andy missing is part of it, you can't just live on synths alone and expect the quality of those first albums, the interplay between synths and guitar is what gave them their edge. This album you can really not get a sense of the personality of the group anymore, other than Simon. It actually sounds like a LeBon solo album with Rhodes doing ALL the music, not the pop/rock band we all loved. There's no breathing space for the music, no light and shade, everthing is thrown in, ultra fast, basslines disappear, no legendary bass like on Rio/DD 81, drums sound generic, even the so called return to analog synths sounds nothing like because it's all mushed up into a harsh and overly bright digital wall of noise with piecemeal lyrics.

Yes I hate writing this but someone has gotta say it cos DD have to understand that not everyone thinks this is the 2nd coming and they have done far better work. This is only my 9th favourite DD album even though it contains probably their best single since Ordinary world (AYNIN)

Thank you for your comment, very interesting perspective you have on their new album.

I agree with you, about the edge and darkness missing on the album, and that is some that Andy Taylor did bring to the band, in his guitar playing and writing skills.

In my opinion it is a shame Andy Taylor parted ways, because he is the missing element of Duran Duran, and a crucial one as well.

I did notice the bass was not as strong and groovy as their past albums, in which "Rio" comes to mind.

All in all it is the best album I have heard from Duran Duran in years, like you said, if it was a little darker, and had more deep crunch, it would be their best album date.

Anonymous . I Don't think that AYNIN is near the class of Rio . I read your comment with interest
you obviously seem like a fan who has enjoyed Duran throughout their long and varied career .

The only thing to me that actually destroys your credibility . Is that you think RCM has some deep quality songs .
It may do to you but they are not Duran songs . There is no depth on that album at all .
I actually enjoy listening to it because I like the music . Its easy to listen to and glossy . The songwriting is awful , the musicianship dreadfully shallow though .
I suppose different people hear different things though , we cant all be the same .

with regards to my last blog i have been there since 81, some of the songs on this new album in my opinion are as close to rio and the first album as any other song they have done, other than a few tracks the wedding was weak, liberty over produced, medazzaland to dark, poptrash very weak, big thing other than one to tracks again weak, notorious is a great album as is seven and the ragged and astronaut, and as far as R.C.M goes that album is DD at there worst by a long way. can i also add that the band has now come out and stated that R.C.M was a disaster from day one,i'm a musician myself and i guess what i'm trying to say is, and this goes for any band thats been going 30 years you will never recapture those magical first years in terms of lyrics and music, there way of thinking is different now and it was different then, i'm not saying i'm wright or wrong some of you will agree some of you won't but thats just my opinion. but overall it is there best album for some years i don't think anyone can dissagree with that all though i'm sure someone will.

Thank you for your comments, I agree songwriting and some of the initial magic, the band had 30 years, will never be recaptured. Like you mentioned it is a matter of age, maturity and a different time period and state of mind.
There are a few DD albums, I do not like, and as some of you mentioned they were utter disasters, and all bands have those albums.
I still stand behind my opinion, that AYNIN is still the best effort in years, and probably the best we will get versus they're older albums.

hi when stated other albums,i'll try to explain with regards to the wedding album apart from about three tracks it is weak in terms of song quality, liberty has got some good songs,i mean (serious) is a gem but the album was over produced,i play synth/keys myself and the big thing album does have a few good tracks on it but it is too electronic not enough real sounding instrument's,i found medazzaland way to dark and poptrash just a mishmash of i don't know what. with regards R.C.M from what i have read sony forced them to go with hip/hop producer timaland, what they shoulda done was all stand ferm agains't sony's wishes because thats the the main reason andy left in the first place, don't get wrong they do miss andy's enthusiasm but in dom brown's defence he does play in the kinda same style as andy so it does sound as if andy was were playing on the album even though he wasn't.but i do think and this is just my opinion that to come out with an album of this quality after 30 years is quite simply outstanding, and there's not many bands over the last 30 years that you can say that about.

this is there best album since notorious, the wedding album was up there, but nowhere near as good as this fine piece of pop fun. i love it, im glad they have gone back to the sound that they have, RCM absolutely sucked!, i tried listening to it once, got through 2 songs and had to turn it off, have never listened to it since and probably wont. It sucks that Andy did leave again as he has always bought a darker edge to there music (well on the first 2 albums anyway). would have been nice to hear some of the post-punk sounds of friends of mine, careless memories and sound of thunder on this album but hey, Andy aint there no more so it will never happen. i've been a fan since '85 and im stoked with this album! love all the songs but my favourite songs:
All You Need Is Now
Girl Panic
Being Followed
Before The Rain

cheers

If you go with the baking soda and lemon program, make
confident your finish up with a regular mild bar soap.
Soap will cut the oil through the lemon off from the teeth.
The same goes for eating lemons; bar soap is the
only mild thing to cut it. Toothpaste will not do
it either. Otherwise the lemon oil left on the tooth will erode
the teeth. There's a tooth soap product around the market that will perform just also, without the soapy flavor. Either one will function.
