Music piracy as always existed, and measures were put in place to help combat it, by imposing levies on blank media, such as blank cassettes and blank CD and DVD's. The manufacturers pay a levy to a collective group, such as BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) and ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). Both groups then distribute the funds to all copyright owners of published songs and materials.
Digital piracy has bloomed over the last the eight years, to the point, that is alarming and dangerous to all parties involved, from Artists to publishers.
This is an interesting Piracy calculator, this calculates the cost of your piracy. If you get caught, this would be the amount of money you would need to pay.
